"LJ is just getting different, not worse! I mean, sure they had that security leak that they lied about, and sure they keep changing things that no one wants them to change, and yeah getting information from them is as fun as getting a stinger from a wasp, but that's just the way of the internet! See also Facebook and Google+, who do similar things! Dreamwidth, who hasn't done shit like this so far, is for squares and drips anyhow."

The issue I'm running into right now, with regards to cooking, is choice paralysis and lack of knowledge.  I will probably be able to get past these by living with cooks (as I am), but in the meantime, my random urge to cook is perpetually thwarted by "...cook what?".  And seriously, these lists of ingredients, bloody daunting.

I should get that I Hate To Cook Book back again some day.

The minuscule ants and their needle-knives are on the warpath again.

When I get itchy like this, all of my patience goes right out the window.  Apparently, it requires patience to spend quiet time with someone when they're in an out-loud-voice sorta mood.  So, now I know -- when I am itchy, get away from persons.

I have a Stylish script that just makes everything black text, because for some reason, a whole lotta websites love the shit out of grey text.

Could someone please explain to me the value of using #555 as a text colour?  Especially on a slightly grey background?  Is there some sort of squinting fetish I've missed out on?  Perhaps people are really tired of being able to read?  Or an underground movement dedicated to increasing Stylish use, perhaps.

I am reminded, through conversation with lovely [personal profile] regyt, that I do in fact love certain poetry, and that certain poetry is, for me, best exemplified by Pablo Neruda.
Lost in the Forest

Lost in the forest, I broke off a dark twig
and lifted its whisper to my thirsty lips:
maybe it was the voice of the rain crying,
a cracked bell, or a torn heart.
Something from far off it seemed
deep and secret to me, hidden by the earth,
a shout muffled by huge autumns,
by the moist half-open darkness of the leaves.
Wakening from the dreaming forest there, the hazel-sprig
sang under my tongue, its drifting fragrance
climbed up through my conscious mind
as if suddenly the roots I had left behind
cried out to me, the land I had lost with my childhood---
and I stopped, wounded by the wandering scent.
Very much alsoAlso yes this.  And of course, the first one I fell in love with.

We're running Mediawiki 1.16 at work.  It can be accessed in two ways:

http://www._____.com/wiki

http://www._____.net/wiki

It all needs to be .net, not .com, even though both are available.  I've already changed the $wgServer variable appropriately.

I don't speak server management fluently.  It's being hosted on CentOS.  What can I look at to get .com to redirect to .net?

I had a dream that a volcano had erupted.  I was with Rose, and a number of friends and such, and then it went off, sending rivers of lava all through the city.  We managed to make our way to higher ground, losing many friends-folk on the way.

At one point, we encountered a couple of looters with guns.  However, it was clear that they knew everyone would be too distracted to stop them, so they weren't threatening to us, as we weren't to them.  They in fact pointed out the best way to get to higher ground faster.  I hope they made it out okay.

We finally made it to the coast, where people were swimming across the... channel, I think?  It was just me and R at that point, and I was completely mentally fuckered from all the stress and loss.

Argh.  Thanks, brain.  If that was my city, I'm going to drown you in lye.

I followed a link to some really good fic about Susan Pevensie, by [personal profile] cofax7, plus follow-up discussion.  (The link goes to the cut-tag area on purpose.)  From there, I found Ana Mardoll, and then through there I found [info]limyaael.

I am entirely in hearts with overthinking things.

Every morning when I go to work, I pop into McD's to get coffee and hash browns.  The bus drops me off on the opposite side of the street, at the crosswalk.  Bus-side, there's also a blackberry hive (I don't know the proper term for "an infestation of blackberries"), and someone put a blue tarpaulin out, to provide cover for two stray kitties.

Here's Smoky!  I usually buy them a sausage muffin with no cheese, if I see them when I get off the bus.  Because kittehs.

things have gone awry
Seems I posted this without taking out the top bit.

The other day, I went out to read at the bar.  Some guy came over and started chatting with me, and it was all cool -- he seemed interesting enough, and I was a little low in the extroversion department, no worries.  Plus, Star Trek nattering, w00t.

He had this flirting style, though, that involved being... too-quickly inclusive, I guess.  Or presumptuous?  Something.  A sample:

Dude: That wasn't nice.
Xtina: I'm not a nice person.
Dude: We'll have to work on that.
Xtina: ...what's this we bullshit?

He kept doing that "we" thing; the "bullshit" line of mine was after a few repeats of that.  Dear random dude: not charming at all.  In fact, bloody irritating.

Turns out, I somewhat* enjoy have folk over, in an introverted house-host fashion.  I am an introvert, and am not even good at making a to-experience when I'm the guest, let alone when I'm societally obligated to administer and otherwise populate the list.

But I am okay with having folk over who I don't have to organise socialising plans around/for.  My best friend [info]trista stayed over this weekend, and [info]esmereldaferalv stayed over for a bit before that, and they had their plans and such, and all was perfectly, entirely copacetic.  (One prompted me to get a bed, and one prompted me to get an apartment key copy made.  Total bonus!)

It's like... less bed & breakfast, more very visiting-related co-living.  Seems I'm fine with the latter.  Makes me want to natter with Josh (live-in partner) about being available to do this more often.

* This has absolutely nothing to do with any recent houseguest, and everything in the world to do with not wanting to unintentionally overpromise anything, at all, in any way. /introvert

Birthday shenanigans:

- Josh got me pizza, hoorays!  I have been broke this fortnight, sooo.

- [info]esmereldaferalv got me SingStar for the PS2, as I have a PS2.  It's like the vocals part of Rock Band.  But!  Instead of characters that you develop la la la, they play the music videos.  !!!  I fucking love watching music videos for songs, so this was a total bonus win.

- I still can't get past this block-kicking part in God of War.

- Friends came over, and we played Dominion.  Said friends brought me beer.  Hooray!

- And then they buggered off, and J, M, and I watched My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic (parts 1 and 2).  I can't remember why.  I can remember that it was effing charming.

So, now I know what to do next year for my birthday.

J: Why is there a plant outside?
X: It was looking at me!  With big soulful anime eyes!  *sadface*
J: ...

It's a dwarf umbrella tree, or so I'm told.  It's about 3' tall, and it was just drooping like a drooper at the store.  I have always loved umbrella plants, for some odd reason, and it was shedding leaves and looking sad!  SAD!  So I took it home, removed the dead leaves, and took care of a few dead extensions that just came right out.

Information on how and when to prune a plant would be awesome.  This poor thing's sort of crowded, but I'm not exactly a gardener, so.

I suppose now it's time to invest in an automatic waterer...

In game, we found a man buried in a tree.  Or perhaps turning into a tree?  Anyways, he'd been a tree for about two years, and never stops screaming.  Someone shot him, to put him out of his misery... and that stopped the screaming, for a few minutes.

J: (to NPC) Where did you shoot him?
NPC: Right between the eyes.
GM: There's a bit of blood on his face, but his forehead is smooth.
J: What do we do now?
X: I say saw off a branch, and see if there's a change in the screaming.
All: ...
X: Oh, c'mon!
Jf: Science is not always the answer!
X+B: Science is always the answer!
X: You blasphemer!
X: Has his hair grown in that time?  If one of you smashes in his head, does it reinflate like a balloon?  Eee!
J: *stare*

C'MON.

(Does he breathe when he screams?  (Answer: no!  Oo!)  If we flash a light in his eyes, do they dilate?  Does he react to sounds near his ears?  Oo, oo, do we have any heavy painkillers, how does he react?  Holy god I must absolutely try to get sap from this tree.)

My near-total lack of give-a-shit re band members sometimes hinders making awesome connections.  Like the two singers of "Easy Lover" are Phil Collins and Philip Bailey.  I already knew that Phil Collins was in Genesis; I was not aware that Philip Bailey was part of Earth, Wind & Fire, but I really, really should have, because I fucking love both that band and Philip Bailey.

The server here has multiple web apps installed, and for the most part it's fine.  However, I need to log into SQL Buddy*, which is a phpMyAdmin alternative that connects to MySQL.  My username in that is christina, and the password is Password1; my username in the invoicing app is Christina, and the password is Password2.  I cannot, for the life of me, get Firefox to stop autofilling long enough for me to &%$* log in.

* I'm testing phpMyAdmin alternatives, because I'm trying to not be mired in the internet dark ages all the time.  After the fifth time of "Clicking Edit opens a new window!", I got fed up.

I don't want to disable form autofill entirely, because it's useful elsewhere.  I don't even want to disable it for the domain, unless I have to, because useful.  I just want to be able to... treat form autofill like popup blockers -- I want to allow all popups from this site disable autofill on this page, that's all.

Halp?

--

[eta] See, I post this because I find answers seconds after I post things.  (Yay confirmation bias!)  I should edit the login page and disable autocomplete in the form element.  Still, if there is a way to do the above, that'd be fab.

--

[eta2] Except it doesn't fucking work.  I put autocomplete="off" in the form tag, as well as both the name and the password fields -- no fucking dice.

I don't even select an option!  Godfuckingdammit.

I lost my Shuffle ages ago, but never got around to caring about it.  Buuut, I'll be in New York next month, and an 8- to 10-hour flight == music is entirely required.  (Picking songs has been fun, because I get to categorise them while I'm there.)  Therefore, shopping.

Criteria:

* Basic music-playing functionality -- play, pause, skip, stop (or "the power button, durr"), volume.
* 4GB is ridiculous, 2GB is great, 1GB is doable.
* Ideally, it will charge via USB, because it will be a glorified thumb drive.  Failing that, please let it use a headphones jack to USB cable (spare Shuffle parts) or a mini-USB cable (spare phone parts).  I don't want to have to buy yet more shit.
* It should work with Linux.  I had, at the time, Ubuntu 9.10 and a third-gen Shuffle.  They did not love each other.  I do not want this again.

I basically want a glorified USB drive that works with Linux hello.  I cannot stress this enough -- I do have a laptop that runs Windows, but all of my music is on a hard drive in my desktop.  There are fifteen different convoluted ways of making this work, or of getting some Windows-focused device, and making that work... or I can get something that Works With Linux perhaps I have mentioned this.

(For example, this just straight-up immediately annoys me.)

And to whoever makes these things, please let it work with Rhythmbox.

--

Naturally, I started here.  Of these, iriver didn't annoy me, and fits the criteria above.  The Sansa Clip looks good, too, and is slightly cheaper, buuuttt.

Goddammit, I want one thing to work how I want it to work out of the goddamn box.  I want a music player that can connect to my music!!

.../rant

We know someone in upstate New York who needs a good custody lawyer ASAP. I'm not at liberty to go into details publicly, but this woman is very afraid that her abusive boyfriend is going to get sole custody of her young child. She's presently being represented by a court-assigned lawyer who doesn't seem to care about the case, and she has very few resources left at this point. Her next hearing is on Thursday.

If you know a good lawyer in New York State who might be willing to take this case for a low fee or pro bono, or at least offer her advice or support, please let me know. If you don't know anyone, please repost this far and wide. As a mother and an abuse survivor, it makes me absolutely sick to my stomach to contemplate a child being left in the hands of an abuser.

What I want today is a way to copy data from SQL Server to MySQL.

Production data is kept on the former on server A, and invoicing is kept on the latter on server B.  There's this fifteen-million-step process of exporting the data from SQL Server, using sed to prettify the data, then importing it into MySQL... why not cut all that out?

If I can, of course.

Query!  Is this a sensical thing to do?  I found this...

AJAXy character sheet management system. You can put together a blank sheet, save it, then use it to track your players. It can save changes to characters, and display a history of said.

Changing templates gives you the option to update, or not, existing sheets in use. You can export characters, with or without history.

Does this exist?

It's uncomfortably warm in here.  We're not ever in direct sunlight, but we are a second-floor apartment.

So, things I should do:

* Replace all light bulbs with spirals.

* Open the windows at night.  (Gah, side-note, get screens for two of the windows.)

* Stop using the drying cycle of the dishwasher, and just open 'er up.

* Buy a few more fans.  One for the dining room area (for the dishes, and for cooking), one for the bathroom (ideally somewhat waterproof? mrr?).

That should be cheaper than getting an A/C unit...
